Bilbao

The bus trip from Gijón over the lush, green countryside and along rhe jagged Bay of Biscay  coastline, past the occasional fishing village, was most enjoyable. Bilbao is a very beautiful city with classic architecture and, because of the countless number of tourists visiting the Guggenheim Museum, rather affluent. I will visit the Guggenheim tomorrow. I am staying in the Casco Viejo or Old Town with its narrow lanes and tapas bars. The 14th century Santiago Cathedral was nearby so I visited it. Mass was in progress so I was able to listen to some beautiful hymn singing. Night was settling in so I spent the rest of the evening wandering around the Old Town,  stopping for the occasional tapas, which are called pintxos in the Basque region, and a vino.
