Santiago de Compostela - Day Two

This morning I headed to the Mercado de Abastos, Santiago's 1920 old world market for breakfast and a wander around. It has fruit, vegetable and cheese stalls, but it mainly deals in fresh fish, some of them still twitching, such as  octopus, shrimp, crabs, lobster and its local speciality, percebes or barnacles. I spent the rest of the day just walking around Santiago's meandering stone streets and lanes, stopping at their lovely old plazas or looking through one of their many museums, such as the exhibits in the 14th century Monastery of Saint Martin with its wonderful ecclesiastical artifacts of altarpieces, paintings, holy jewellery and liturgical clothes. Tomorrow I take the early bus to Gijón for an overnight stay in this northern industrial town before heading on to the Basque country.
